Chalk Mitchell, Board President Attorney Mr. Mitchell grew up in Helena, Arkansas, and graduated from Eliza Miller High School before pursing his undergraduate degree at Morehouse College and graduate degrees at both Georgetown University Law Center and Harvard University. He is an attorney in Helena and serves on the board of several community groups. Mr. Mitchell was elected Board Chair this fall and attended a day-long Board of Directors training session at KIPP School Summit this summer. Brent Black, Board Vice President Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Southern Bancorp Mr. Black joined Southern Bancorp as Controller in 2003 and was subsequently promoted to Chief Financial Officer in 2005. Mr. Black is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Arkansas Society of Certified Public Accountants, and Rotary International. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for KIPP Delta Preparatory School and is also a member of the Arkansas State Chamber Leadership Class.
Chris Allen, Board Secretary Customer Service Manager for Entergy Arkansas As an employee for Entergy Arkansas, a four-state electric company, Ms. Allen was instrumental in securing a $20,000 grant for KIPP from the company's foundation. Her connections in Little Rock have also been beneficial as she has been able to introduce many new people to KIPP. Ms. Allen served on KIPP Delta’s Advisory Council prior to joining the board of directors. She also serves on the board of the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Helena Little Theater.
Sam Commella Vice-President and General Manager, Nucor Steel
Mr. Commella is VP of one of the
largest sheet steel mills in the country, Nucor Steel, based in Blytheville,
Arkansas. His company has been one of our biggest supporters as we expand to
serve students at KIPP Blytheville College Preparatory School. Mr. Commella
also serves on the board of directors for Associated Industries of Arkansas and
is a member of the state Chamber of Commerce.
Ron Nurnberg Executive Director of Teach For America in the Mississippi Delta As Executive Director, Mr. Nurnberg has presided over the expansion of the Delta corps from 32 corps members in 1996 to nearly 160 during the 2007-08 school year. He has also helped to maximize impact in the region by overseeing the regional program, building relationships with civic and community organizations to maximize the resources available to corps members, maintaining relationships with school districts, and raising $15,000 per current Delta corps member from individuals, businesses, and foundations in the communities where corps members are placed. Prior to joining Teach For America staff in 1996, Ron completed a master's degree in Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi. Before his position with TFA, he also served as Executive Director of Main Street Helena, Project Coordinator for the Center of Southern Culture in Oxford and Vicksburg, Assistant Director of Central College's American Program at Trinity College in Carmarthen, Wales, and operated a highly successful pub and restaurant business in St. Louis. His undergraduate degree is in Business Administration and Interpersonal Communications.
Andre Valley Attorney Mr. Valley grew up in Helena and received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Mr. Valley practices law in Helena and serves as the City Attorney. Mr. Valley has been instrumental in helping our facility committee navigate city ordinances and zoning restrictions as we plan and execute our campus expansion.
Randy Zook
President and CEO, Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Arkansas
A native of McGehee, Mr. Zook is a 1966 graduate of the
University of Arkansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business
Administration. Before serving as deputy director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC), he spent nearly 34 years with Atlantic Envelope Company of
Atlanta, serving as president and CEO of the $200 million
company from 1989 to 2004. After his retirement, he began his second career involved in
economic development efforts. In 2006, he served as chairman of the Central
Ozarks Task Force for Economic Development and currently serves as
a member of the Melbourne Airport Commission.
